Project Compassion Week 2 Year 5

COIN DESIGN

On Tuesday  26th February, Year 5 had a coin design competition between our table groups. We had to make a shape or symbol out of silver or gold coins that represents the charity.  It was a three way tie between the Ghostbusters, Chatterboxes, and Fantastic 6. The Ghostbusters made a peace sign representing world peace. The Chatterboxes made a P and a cross. The P represents a peaceful world and the cross represents the day Jesus died. The Fantastic 6 made a love heart connected to a cross. The love heart represents the people we give money to and the cross represents following Jesus’ way. The Treblemakers made four hands labelled food, water, love and respect, and they also made a peace sign, the four hands represented the things that we do to help charities and the sign also represented world peace.  The All Stars made a love heart, a dove, a cross and people giving money to the poor. The heart represents loving the poor, the dove represents peace, the cross represents people following Jesus and the people giving money to the poor represents exactly what it is. And the last group the gangsters, made a peace sign which represents giving peace to the poor

The Little Refugee By Anh Do and Suzanne Do Illustrated by Bruce Whatley

Last week we read the Little Refugee by Anh and Suzanne Do.  

Luke and Charbel have retold the story for you.

The Little Refugee

The little refugee is about a family of fourteen people all squashed in a tiny three room house in Vietnam. But one day a war started, so forty people got on a fishing boat and began a journey to Australia.

On the way to Australia they saw a ship and they bust out with excitement but when the boat came closer they noticed that they were actually pirates.The pirates threatened them for they precious belongings. They also tried to throw a baby overboard.  However, the refugees all stood up to fight them.  So they let the boy go back to his mother.  One pirate felt sorry for them so he threw a bottle of water to them.

They kept on sailing, until they found a German cargo ship. They burst with enjoyment because they were safe.

When they got to Australia they were walking around with worn clothes. So a nun gave them boys clothes and girls clothes but they were both boys. They were very poor and people stole their prize possession which was a sewing machine.

After a while the two boys went to school and made friends. A new kid came to their school and nobody wanted to be his friend. So when he was eating lunch Anh walked up to him and they became friends.  

They had a special end of year assembly where they were going to announce the class captains for the next year. Ah invited his mum and dad. They were announcing the class captains.... “ANH DO” they said. His mum and dad started to clap and cheer for their son.

Boy Overboard

We have just started reading Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.  We spent some time looking at the cover of the book and predicting what we thought the novel would be about.

Chapter 1

The next lesson we read Chapter 1.  Below are a couple of the summaries written by students in our class. 


In chapter one Jamal, Yusuf and their friends were playing soccer. Then Jamal's sister Bibi came and started to play with them. However it was illegal for girls to play soccer and they did not want her to play. They were scared because it was illegal and they might get caught.

In chapter 1  Jamal was playing soccer with his friends and his sister came along and wanted to play. He wouldn’t let her play but she still scored a try. There are three rules why he wouldn’t let his sister Bibi play.
1. Girls aren’t allowed to play soccer 
2. She’s not allowed out of the house without her parents 
3. Girls have to wear a headscarf to leave the house.

We think it is unfair that girls can’t play soccer and that they don’t have their own teams for Afghanistan.

In chapter 1, Jamal and his friends were playing soccer but he couldn’t score a goal. His sister  Bibi comes and made the kids so scared because it was against the law for girls to play soccer. They all tried to get her but they couldn’t and she scored a goal which made her brother happy. He was happy but then angry at her because she broke the rules. The others were scared so they ran home leaving them. They were scared they would be caught with the girl playing soccer. Bibi wanted to play again so she ran to the desert to get the ball and Jamal chased after her.
