Recently some students from Year 5 were lucky enough to participate in inter-school sport trials.  Three girls from our class went to the netball trials and three boys went to the NRL trials.  Check out their posts about the days.

On Wednesday 20th February, 6 girls were selected from C.T.K for netball trials to represent Sydney.
The people who were selected were:

There were around 10 Catholic Schools and there was 6 games played by very talented girls. It was a very fun day people made some new friends along the way.

Every girl tried very hard to get through but unfortunately only one girl got in and that was Georgia.

NRL Trials
by Jack, Christian E and Dylan

The NRL was on Monday 25th of February 2013.  It was held at Liverpool in Hoxton Park RD. There was a club there and a sports centre, they split us into two age groups; under 11’s and under 12’s. There were 4 teams for each age group. We had to play tackle footy.  We had 2 losses and 1 tie but no wins. It was hard with the big kids in the other teams.

Congratulations to all students who tried out at school, went to the trials and who got through. Year 5 are very proud you all!

How many marbles?

Foil Boat Experiment
By Emma and Georgia

Yr 5 did a Foil Boat Experiment which is where you had to make a boat out of foil that could float on water. The aim was to put as many marbles as you could in your boat and the winner was the table with the most marbles in their boat. Each tables’ score was bigger than their first attempt.

This was the score board:

Chatterboxes: 1st Attempt: 17 and  2nd Attempt: 49

Gangsters: 1st Attempt:  67 and 2nd Attempt: 153       (winner)

Ghostbusters: 1st Attempt: 34 and  2nd Attempt: 106

Treblemakers: 1st Attempt: 45 and 2nd Attempt: 106

All Stars: 1st Attempt: 60 and 2nd Attempt: 67

Fantastics 6: 1st Attempt: 15 and  2nd Attempt: 148

The Gangsters table won again and other tables thought how they can improve
The Chatterboxes said “We thought we could improve on the boat size.”
The Ghostbusters said “We thought we could improve on the length”
The Treblemakers said “We thought we could improve by not leaving any gaps in the foil.
The All Stars said “We thought we could make it wider so we could fit more marbles”          The Fantastic 6 said “We thought we could improve on their length like
the Ghostbusters.”

Boy Overboard Chapters 2 and 3

We have continued to read Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.  To re-read our post on chapter 1 click here.  When we left last time Jamal and his friends were playing soccer.  Bibi joined them and kicked the ball out onto the desert.

Summary of Chapters 2 and 3

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi went to get the soccer ball so Jamal followed her. They spotted a tank in the desert. To make matters worse, the soccer ball was stuck under the tank. Then Bibi started throwing rocks at the tank. Jamal told Bibi to go check on Yusuf and on the way there she stood on a mine. By Christian E & Mikayla

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi kicked a ball into the desert and it went past a tank, so Bibi started throwing rocks at them. Jamal was really scared of dying because the tank aimed their guns at them both. Jamal told Bibi to go home, but Bibi said that she had already left a note saying that she has gone to play soccer with Jamal and his friends. By Luke and Ashleigh

In chapters 2 & 3 Jamal and Bibi went to get the soccer ball behind the crater but they realised it was stuck beneath the tank. Bibi wrote a note to her parents saying she was playing soccer. Jamal was scared they would get caught and their parents would panic. Then Jamal pulled the ball out from under the tank and heard Bibi screaming and the goalie told him “Bibi stepped on the mine”. We found out about some of the rules that the children in Afghanistan in the novel must follow. These rules are called edicts. We then used google drawings to create posters of some of the edicts.

What do you think of the edicts?  Do you think they are fair?  Should Australia have similar edicts?

Love: When you care about another.
Teamwork:Is when you work together as a team
Sharing:Is when you give a piece of your share to somebody else.
Confidence:Is when you have the courage to do something.
Spirit:when you look at the world different from everybody else
Care:pay close attention to something
Grace:Is when you are careful with what you are doing.
Maturity:Is when you act your age.
Understanding: Is when you know what is going on.
Honesty: When you tell the truth
