Clean Up Australia Day

Gardening

By Dylan and Tracey
On Thursday 28th of February 2013 CTK gardened and picked up rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day. In the gardening we planted plants, took out weeds, we watered the plants.  We also found money nearly $11 and we placed it in project compassion.

We used garden tools and a watering can. We also cleaned up because it is nearly Clean Up Australia Day. We cleaned up on the grass area and we planted plants near the canteen. There were bugs in the garden and lots of dirt and branches.  All in all we had a lot of fun!

Miss Lee's Magic Trick

                          Maths Magic Tricks

By Gabby.N and Dylan.K

We learnt how to do Miss Lee’s Maths Magic Tricks. This an example.
10000-2345=

First you take 1 away from 10000.  This equals 9999.

Next you take 2345 away from 9999
9999
- 2345
=7654

Then you add one back on to the answer
because we took 1 away before, this is the answer.
7654+1=7655

This Magic Trick is easier to use because it takes less time and it is more easier. This trick works on different numbers here is another example.
1000000-5432=
1000000-1=999999

999999-5432
= 994567+1
=994568 this is the answer.

Gabby N and Dylan created an awesome tutorial explaining how to do the magic trick. Check it out below!

What did you think about the magic trick? Will you use it in the future?

Sporting Achievements

Recently some students from Year 5 were lucky enough to participate in inter-school sport trials.  Three girls from our class went to the netball trials and three boys went to the NRL trials.  Check out their posts about the days.

NETBALL TRIALS
By Georgia and Mikayla

On Wednesday 20th February, 6 girls were selected from C.T.K for netball trials to represent Sydney.
The people who were selected were:
Mikayla
Georgia
Emma
Jessica
Jacqueline
Grace
There were around 10 Catholic Schools and there was 6 games played by very talented girls. It was a very fun day people made some new friends along the way.

Every girl tried very hard to get through but unfortunately only one girl got in and that was Georgia.

NRL Trials
by Jack, Christian E and Dylan

The NRL was on Monday 25th of February 2013.  It was held at Liverpool in Hoxton Park RD. There was a club there and a sports centre, they split us into two age groups; under 11’s and under 12’s. There were 4 teams for each age group. We had to play tackle footy.  We had 2 losses and 1 tie but no wins. It was hard with the big kids in the other teams.

Congratulations to all students who tried out at school, went to the trials and who got through. Year 5 are very proud you all!

How many marbles?

Foil Boat Experiment
By Emma and Georgia

Yr 5 did a Foil Boat Experiment which is where you had to make a boat out of foil that could float on water. The aim was to put as many marbles as you could in your boat and the winner was the table with the most marbles in their boat. Each tables’ score was bigger than their first attempt.

This was the score board:

Chatterboxes: 1st Attempt: 17 and  2nd Attempt: 49

Gangsters: 1st Attempt:  67 and 2nd Attempt: 153       (winner)

Ghostbusters: 1st Attempt: 34 and  2nd Attempt: 106

Treblemakers: 1st Attempt: 45 and 2nd Attempt: 106

All Stars: 1st Attempt: 60 and 2nd Attempt: 67

Fantastics 6: 1st Attempt: 15 and  2nd Attempt: 148

The Gangsters table won again and other tables thought how they can improve
The Chatterboxes said “We thought we could improve on the boat size.”
The Ghostbusters said “We thought we could improve on the length”
The Treblemakers said “We thought we could improve by not leaving any gaps in the foil.
The All Stars said “We thought we could make it wider so we could fit more marbles”          The Fantastic 6 said “We thought we could improve on their length like
the Ghostbusters.”

Monet's Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge

  Monet

By Angelica and Jasmine

Year 5 has painted a Monet painting. First we used a white oil pastel and drew a bridge. Next we used green and blue watercolours for the background. Then the next week we added water lilies.  We drew the water lilies with oil pastels.  We made the water lilies in the front big and the ones at the back smaller. Next we got white oil pastels and put a bit of white on the water lilies then we smudged it with our finger because Monet didn’t care if it wasn’t neat. Then we drew flowers on the water lilies. After that we coloured the water lilies with red and pink oil pastels then smudged the water lilies with our fingers. Finally we hung them up in the classroom.  They look so good- we have some great artist in this class!

Boy Overboard Chapters 2 and 3

We have continued to read Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.  To re-read our post on chapter 1 click here.  When we left last time Jamal and his friends were playing soccer.  Bibi joined them and kicked the ball out onto the desert.

Summary of Chapters 2 and 3

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi went to get the soccer ball so Jamal followed her. They spotted a tank in the desert. To make matters worse, the soccer ball was stuck under the tank. Then Bibi started throwing rocks at the tank. Jamal told Bibi to go check on Yusuf and on the way there she stood on a mine. By Christian E & Mikayla

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi kicked a ball into the desert and it went past a tank, so Bibi started throwing rocks at them. Jamal was really scared of dying because the tank aimed their guns at them both. Jamal told Bibi to go home, but Bibi said that she had already left a note saying that she has gone to play soccer with Jamal and his friends. By Luke and Ashleigh

In chapters 2 & 3 Jamal and Bibi went to get the soccer ball behind the crater but they realised it was stuck beneath the tank. Bibi wrote a note to her parents saying she was playing soccer. Jamal was scared they would get caught and their parents would panic. Then Jamal pulled the ball out from under the tank and heard Bibi screaming and the goalie told him “Bibi stepped on the mine”. By Sarina and Tracey

We found out about some of the rules that the children in Afghanistan in the novel must follow. These rules are called edicts. We then used google drawings to create posters of some of the edicts.

By Georgia and Jack

 By Sarina and Tracey

What do you think of the edicts?  Do you think they are fair?  Should Australia have similar edicts?

I was hungry

Matthew 25:31-46 ✝
By Michael V and Mahrae

We heard a story from the bible written by Matthew in the chapter 25 verses 31 to 46.

I was hungry and you gave me food
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink
I was naked and you gave me a clothing

I was a stranger and you welcomed me
I was sick and you took care of me
I was in prison and you visited me

We have been thinking of ways we can live out these actions in our lives.

If somebody is hungry you give them food by giving them money for food.  We help people by bringing food for the Vinnies Christmas hampers.
If somebody is thirsty, you give them water or any other liquid.  By donating to project compassion we help them have clean drinking water.
If somebody is naked or does not have enough clothes, just donate them clothes to wear.  You could put the clothes you grow out of in a charity clothing bin.
If someone is a ‘stranger’ or new to the school you can welcome them.
If someone is sick, you can always take care of them and visit them.  We will visit the elderly people in the nursing home this year.
If you have a friend that is imprisoned, you can visit them. You might also have family overseas that is unable to come to Australia so you could talk to them on the phone.

We used the app comic touch to create freeze frames showing how we can live out this passage from the bible.

Project Compassion Week 1

Coin Line

By Clare and Dylan

We are raising money for Project Compassion. On Thursday (21-2-13) our class participated in the school coin line. Every class had to line up their coins next to each other and see which class had the most coins so far. Year 5’s coin line was the longest, measuring 13 m and 34 cm.  We have also had some class competitions between our table groups, so far we have had a coin tower, and coin line competition.   Our goal for Lent is $350 so far we have raised more than $125.

Foil Boat Design Challenge

The Foil Boat Experiment

  By Emma and Kathleen

We had to design a boat with our table group that could hold the most amount of marbles.
After planning our design on paper we then had the opportunity to make a boat out of foil.  We then got to put our boat in the water and we also had to put marbles in it to see who got the most in their foil boat.

Amount of marbles that each boat could hold:

Gangsters: 67
Treblemakers: 45
Ghostbuster: 34
Chatterboxes:17
Fantastic 6: 15

The Gangsters table were able to have the most marbles in their foil boat.  We had to evaluate our boat to see what we could fix or replace to make our boat hold more marbles. In the treblemakers evaluation they realised they "needed to not leave any gaps and create a thicker platform." The Ghostbusters thought their boat sank because "Water starting coming into the boat and made it sink." The Fantastic 6 discovered that they needed to re-look at their design "Because the boat fell on it's side which made the water go in the boat."

We will be trying this again and see if we can improve the number of marbles our boat can hold.

We're Always Respectful

RESPECT VIDEO

BY MIKAYLA AND GABBY

In Year 5, we have been learning about respect. We have made a song about respect to the tune of Good Time by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen. Check it out!

Remember to always respect yourself, others and property!

Our Cultural Heritage

Google Maps
By Sarina and Tracey

Year 5 have finding out about our cultural heritage.

Miss Lee created a google map where we placed a pin point of where our ancestors came from.  We realised some of our cultural backgrounds are the same and others are different.  Check out
our class map below.

Whole Number and Roman Numerals

Whole Number & Roman Numerals

By Lily and Jason

We are learning about Whole Number and Roman Numerals.

Roman Numerals
We have learnt that if the bigger number is at the front it is take away.  However if the smaller number is at the front then it is plus.  Check out the tutorial created by two of our students.

We have also learnt if there is a bar on top of a Roman numeral then it increases it by 1 thousand.

Whole Number
We have been looking at the place value of large numbers. Some students created their own google drawings to show the place value of large numbers.

967 875 By Christian B, Kathleen, and Gabby N

456 738 By Jason

We also learnt how to do expanded notation.  For example if the number is 5367.  Then you have to write it like this: (5x1000) + (3x100) + (6x10) + (7x1) = 5367.  Expanded notation helps us see the place value of each number. Below is a tutorial showing an example of expanded notation.

Respect

Respect

 By Michael Vu and Christopher

Respect is when someone is a very nice person and is kind to others and helps them. Respect is one of the important values in life. In Year 5 we have one rule: RESPECT! We respect ourselves, each other and all property.

We watched a fantastic youtube video made by a class in England about respect.

We have used the app comic touch to show the ways we can respect each other.

As well as discussing what respect looks like, we have also been exploring what respect is not. Two of our classmates created a photo showing one example of what respect is NOT!

What is one way you can show respect to yourself, others and property?

Bulldogs Visit

BULLDOGS VISIT

By Mahrae, Meg and Christian E

On Monday 11th of February a couple of Bulldogs players came to our school and talked to us about bullying.

We watched a video about bullying, we learnt that bullying can happen anywhere. We also learnt that bullying can happen when you are any age and in any sort of way.

They also had a few competitions were the kids got to go against the bulldogs. There were push up competitions, another one was passing the ball around your body to another person, passing the ball around body versus one of the Bulldogs players and many many more.

Some kids had the opportunity to ask the Bulldogs a question such as:
How many people are in the Bulldogs?
Did you play for any team before the Bulldogs?
How long have you played for the Bulldogs?
Everyone found out that Trent played for Manly before Bulldogs and many other interesting facts.

Thank you to Mr Fieni for organising the visit!

The Little Refugee By Anh Do and Suzanne Do Illustrated by Bruce Whatley

Last week we read the Little Refugee by Anh and Suzanne Do.

Luke and Charbel have retold the story for you.

The Little Refugee

The little refugee is about a family of fourteen people all squashed in a tiny three room house in Vietnam. But one day a war started, so forty people got on a fishing boat and began a journey to Australia.

On the way to Australia they saw a ship and they bust out with excitement but when the boat came closer they noticed that they were actually pirates. The pirates threatened them for they precious belongings. They also tried to throw a baby overboard.  However, the refugees all stood up to fight them.  So they let the boy go back to his mother.  One pirate felt sorry for them so he threw a bottle of water to them.

They kept on sailing, until they found a German cargo ship. They burst with enjoyment because they were safe.

When they got to Australia they were walking around with worn clothes. So a nun gave them boys clothes and girls clothes but they were both boys. They were very poor and people stole their prize possession which was a sewing machine.

After a while the two boys went to school and made friends. A new kid came to their school and nobody wanted to be his friend. So when he was eating lunch Anh walked up to him and they became friends.

They had a special end of year assembly where they were going to announce the class captains for the next year. Ah invited his mum and dad. They were announcing the class captains.... “ANH DO” they said. His mum and dad started to clap and cheer for their son.

How would you feel if you had to leave your home and travel to a new country like Anh and his family?

Boy Overboard

We have just started reading Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.  We spent some time looking at the cover of the book and predicting what we thought the novel would be about.

Have a look at our predictions:

Chapter 1

The next lesson we read Chapter 1.  Below are a couple of the summaries written by students in our class.

In chapter one Jamal, Yusuf and their friends were playing soccer. Then Jamal's sister Bibi came and started to play with them. However it was illegal for girls to play soccer and they did not want her to play. They were scared because it was illegal and they might get caught.

By Charbel and Christopher

In chapter 1  Jamal was playing soccer with his friends and his sister came along and wanted to play. He wouldn’t let her play but she still scored a try. There are three rules why he wouldn’t let his sister Bibi play.
1. Girls aren’t allowed to play soccer
2. She’s not allowed out of the house without her parents
3. Girls have to wear a headscarf to leave the house.

We think it is unfair that girls can’t play soccer and that they don’t have their own teams for Afghanistan.

By Emma and Mahrae

In chapter 1, Jamal and his friends were playing soccer but he couldn’t score a goal. His sister  Bibi comes and made the kids so scared because it was against the law for girls to play soccer. They all tried to get her but they couldn’t and she scored a goal which made her brother happy. He was happy but then angry at her because she broke the rules. The others were scared so they ran home leaving them. They were scared they would be caught with the girl playing soccer. Bibi wanted to play again so she ran to the desert to get the ball and Jamal chased after her.
By Michael V and Jason

Have you read chapter 1 of Boy Overboard? What did you like or dislike about the chapter? What did you think will happen next?
