Statement of Position

Statement of position
By Emma and Mahrae

On Friday 3rd of May, Yr 5 tried to write the best statement of position for the topic Everyone should learn to cook. We tried to use rhetorical questions, alliteration, language of opinion and interesting sentences.  We wanted to make it really interesting for the audience. Here are some of them:

How would you like to be a famous chef like Jamie Oliver? It’s as simple  as learning how to cook. Common sense determines that learning to cook can lead to many things. For an example you can become a  professional, surprise your mum for Mothers Day’s or even be able to know how to cook in the bush when you’re camping.
By Mahrae and Emma

Have you heard of Jamie Oliver? I bet you have. He’s one of the most famous chefs in the world. How would you like to be someone like him? Five stars restaurants, your own TV show, adored by the world. Common sense determines that if you want to be like him then you have to learn to cook.  Reasons you should learn to cook include passing down generations of delicious recipes, saving money and even making money!
By Mikayla

Does your kitchen rule? It is true to say that your kitchen will rule if you learn to cook. If you learn to cook, the chances you will be a natural are high.  There are so many famous cooks out there, you could be one, you could even have your own TV show. Wouldn’t your mum love to relax on her birthday and Mother’s Day?  If you learn to cook she can!
By Meg

Wouldn't it feel good to be owning a five star restaurant, or owning your own cooking tv show? That is what cooking can do for you. It can be left with no doubt that everyone should learn to cook. You could learn to cook yourself, save money and even be one of the famous chefs. You could be Adriano Zumbo, cooking famous desserts or Jamie Oliver, cooking famous dishes that taste sensational. Would you like to be a professional chef, watched by millions on tv?

Modality Challenge

By Mikayla and Michael.N

It all started with Miss Lee going to a meeting where Tom Barrett  (a man from England), gave Miss Lee a challenge for our class to do. The challenge was that we had to write at least 50 sentences using at least one word of modality in each sentence that we write. We ended up  doing  over 200 sentences!!!

Everyone earned 13 merits. We also had a mini challenge for the sentence number:
  • Jason wrote the 50th sentence
  • Michael and Charbel got the 100th sentence
  • Christian B and Jack got the 150th sentence
  • Gaby got the 200th sentence
They each earnt a raffle ticket. Everyone did a great job with their sentences. Gabby N wrote a fantastic 29 sentences!

We came up with some great sentences. Here are some good ones-

It is possible that it is going to be sunny tomorrow (Angelica)
It is completely unacceptable for schools to have animals in the classroom. (Tracey)
It is obvious that there are eight planets (Michael V)
It is vital that all children learn to swim (Gabby N)
I seriously recommend that smoking should be illegal (Ashleigh)
It is definite that I will eat chicken tonight (Luke)
It is completely unacceptable for children to smoke. (Georgia)

Mahrae and Emma created a wordle of our sentences:

We also have a google presentation of the sentences:

Pope Francis I

The New Pope

By Mikayla and Luke

The new Pope is Francis the first. The conclave met in the Vatican for two days.  The first time smoke came out it was black which meant there was no pope elected yet. The second time the crowd of thousands were amazed when they saw white smoke after only 2 days. They saw that he was an 76 year old Argentinian cardinal who was now a Pope to 1.2 billion Catholics all around the world. His real name is Jorge Mario Bergoglio. He gave his first blessing on Sunday at the Vatican. He blessed over 100000 people. Here are some photos.

Then each teacher chose some people in the class to put some coins on the outline of the hand.  We raised enough money to do the outline of the hand and even make some nails. In Week 1 our class raised 127 dollars, Week 2 we raised 61 dollars and 50 cents and in Week 3 we raised 47 dollars and 95 cents.

Project Compassion Week 2 Year 5

COIN DESIGN

BY CHARBEL AND MIKAYLA

On Tuesday  26th February, Year 5 had a coin design competition between our table groups. We had to make a shape or symbol out of silver or gold coins that represents the charity.  It was a three way tie between the Ghostbusters, Chatterboxes, and Fantastic 6. The Ghostbusters made a peace sign representing world peace. The Chatterboxes made a P and a cross. The P represents a peaceful world and the cross represents the day Jesus died. The Fantastic 6 made a love heart connected to a cross. The love heart represents the people we give money to and the cross represents following Jesus’ way. The Treblemakers made four hands labelled food, water, love and respect, and they also made a peace sign, the four hands represented the things that we do to help charities and the sign also represented world peace.  The All Stars made a love heart, a dove, a cross and people giving money to the poor. The heart represents loving the poor, the dove represents peace, the cross represents people following Jesus and the people giving money to the poor represents exactly what it is. And the last group the gangsters, made a peace sign which represents giving peace to the poor

The NRL was on Monday 25th of February 2013.  It was held at Liverpool in Hoxton Park RD. There was a club there and a sports centre, they split us into two age groups; under 11’s and under 12’s. There were 4 teams for each age group. We had to play tackle footy.  We had 2 losses and 1 tie but no wins. It was hard with the big kids in the other teams.

Congratulations to all students who tried out at school, went to the trials and who got through. Year 5 are very proud you all!

Boy Overboard Chapters 2 and 3

We have continued to read Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman.  To re-read our post on chapter 1 click here.  When we left last time Jamal and his friends were playing soccer.  Bibi joined them and kicked the ball out onto the desert.

Summary of Chapters 2 and 3

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi went to get the soccer ball so Jamal followed her. They spotted a tank in the desert. To make matters worse, the soccer ball was stuck under the tank. Then Bibi started throwing rocks at the tank. Jamal told Bibi to go check on Yusuf and on the way there she stood on a mine. By Christian E & Mikayla

In chapters 2 and 3, Bibi kicked a ball into the desert and it went past a tank, so Bibi started throwing rocks at them. Jamal was really scared of dying because the tank aimed their guns at them both. Jamal told Bibi to go home, but Bibi said that she had already left a note saying that she has gone to play soccer with Jamal and his friends. By Luke and Ashleigh

In chapters 2 & 3 Jamal and Bibi went to get the soccer ball behind the crater but they realised it was stuck beneath the tank. Bibi wrote a note to her parents saying she was playing soccer. Jamal was scared they would get caught and their parents would panic. Then Jamal pulled the ball out from under the tank and heard Bibi screaming and the goalie told him “Bibi stepped on the mine”. By Sarina and Tracey

We found out about some of the rules that the children in Afghanistan in the novel must follow. These rules are called edicts. We then used google drawings to create posters of some of the edicts.

By Georgia and Jack

 By Sarina and Tracey

What do you think of the edicts?  Do you think they are fair?  Should Australia have similar edicts?
