Electing a New Pope

It is a pretty exciting time in the Catholic Church at the moment.  We have been finding out about the process of electing a new Pope.  Have a look at what we have discovered.

How a New  Pope is Elected

By Angelica, Sarina, Jasmine

The cardinals are lined up into rows, there are 117 cardinals around the world voting to be a pope. The cardinals are locked in a room. This meeting is called a conclave .

The doctor and cook go with them into the conclave. The cardinals are only allowed to drink and eat bread and water.

The cardinals pick their candidate and write it down on piece of paper and put in secret ballot 4 times a day. They do this 2 times in the morning and 2 times in the afternoon in the Sistine Chapel.

To choose the pope the candidates need 2/3 of the votes. They burn  the ballot papers and and use the colour of the smoke it signal the result to the public.
Black smoke= No result
White smoke = new Pope
If they pick a Pope they use a chemical to form white smoke.

When they have chosen the Pope, the Pope chooses his Papal name and signs the paperwork.  Then he appears on the Vatican's main balcony to deliver his apostolic blessing.

  4. I know why the pope has taken his hat off and put it back on Answer : He takes it off to introduce his self as a Priest not a Bishop.
